On a holiday to Austria and Oberammergau in 2010

The dates 11 – 18 September 2010

Departure Airport: Birmingham

Hotel: Wolfgangseehof Hotel in Strobl

Cost: £1,095 per person + £25 Flight supplement

You can find details of our holiday in the Salzburg & its Lakes Section of the brochure where we will stay at the Wolfgangseehof hotel.

We shall begin our holiday at Oberammergau where we see the famous Passion Play that is performed once every ten years in this lovely Alpine Village.  We will spend the first two nights in the village of Oberammergau with freedom to explore the streets, and the shops, and sample the village atmosphere before watching the Passion Play in the afternoon and evening. We will meet up for lunch in the village before the play commences at 2-30pm. There is a three hour break commencing at 5-00pm. and dinner will be served during this interval. The Drama continues after the break and concludes at about 10-30pm. This is the first season that the play has been performed in the evening and it promises to add to the drama of the actions on the open air stage with theatre lighting also being used for the very first time. The following morning we will have another opportunity to explore the village before driving to Strobl for a five night stay.  The Passion Play can be such a powerful experience, it is good to have a few days to reflect and let the impression sink in as we relax in this beautiful part of Austria.

During our week in the Austrian lake district there will be optional excursions to Salzburg, a day touring the lake district including a sail and an evening Mozart dinner concert in Salzburg, which promises to be a highlight of our visit.  One day, the hotel will provide a local guide for an introductory walk and a buffet of traditional Austrian food will be a feature one evening.  Our hotel is close to the lake with an easy boat connection to St. Wolfgang and local bus to Salzburg.

History

Towards the end of the Thirty Years War in central Europe there was an outbreak of the plague in Bavaria. The elders of the village of Oberammergau, in an effort to protect their village, decided to seal it off from outside contact. But an itinerant worker returned, bringing the plague with him, and it swept through the village. Whereupon the people solemnly vowed that, if God would show His compassion and lift the scourge, every ten years they would enact the Passion of our Lord. The plague left the village in 1633 and, as a perpetual thanksgiving and re-affirmation of faith, the villagers of Oberammergau have performed the Passion Play at regular intervals ever since.

How wonderful it is to witness a 366 year old promise being faithfully kept by a whole community. Without exception the actors are born in the village of Oberammergau or have lived in the village for twenty years or more.

One thousand villagers including children, whom it is a particular joy to watch, appear on the open stage, whilst another four hundred are involved backstage or in the choir and orchestra.

It is inspiring to know that some of the children we saw in 2000 may now become the principal actors. The three generations of villagers you will see performing are but links in an unbroken chain stretching back to 1634.

THE EXPERIENCE

The Passion Play theatre is large with almost 5,000 seats, but intimate in nature. The season lasts twenty weeks allowing approximately 500,000 to attend. The play is performed in all weather conditions with the audience under cover, viewing the open-air stage and natural mountain backdrop.

The Play portrays the Passion of Christ from the entry into Jerusalem to the Resurrection. The presentation is so realistic that it is easy to imagine oneself at the foot of the cross or in the Garden of Gethsemane. The action is interspersed with tableaux from the Old Testament of Messianic prophesies and the whole performance is set to music and sung by a huge choir.

It is not possible to stay more than one or two nights in Oberammergau during the Passion Play season and for this reason McCabe combines a visit to the Passion Play with a holiday among the beautiful lakes and majestic mountains of Austria.
